Travel to Hawaii

Information and protocols for pet travel to Hawaii
(Please read carefully)

Hawaii is rabies-free. Hawaii's quarantine law is designed to protect residents and pets from potentially serious health problems associated with the introduction and spread of rabies. All dogs and cats, regardless of age (puppies and kittens included) or purpose, must comply with Hawaii's dog and cat import requirements.

Chapter 4-29 Hawaii Administrative Rules, governs the importation of dogs, cats and other carnivores into Hawaii. This law states that dogs and cats meeting specific pre- and post-arrival requirements may qualify for 5-day-or-less quarantine program, which has a provision for direct release at Honolulu International Airport after inspection.

Furthermore, the law requires dogs and cats not meeting all of the specific 5-Day-Or-Less program requirements to be quarantined for up to 120 days upon arrival In Hawaii.

Prohibited Animals: The regulation of animal breeds and species that are permitted to enter Hawaii is under Plant Quarantine Branch jurisdiction and administrative rules.  Non-domestic dogs and cats and hybrids such as wolf, wolf cross, Dingo, Bengal, Savannah, etc are prohibited under Plant Quarantine (PQ) law.

Puppies and Kittens: Due to the minimum amount of time needed to prepare a puppy or kitten to meet the requirements of the 5-Day-Or-Less program, a puppy or kitten will be about 10 months of age by the time the preparations are completed. Puppies and kittens not able to meet all of the requirements for the 5-Day-Or-Less program will be quarantined for 120 days.

What do I need to do?
Every one's travel plans are different and every one's pets have unique medical histories.  The first step you need to take is to review all of the information provided in the links below and develop a personalized timeline for you and your pet from now until your date of departure.  Your timeline should include all of the visits your pet needs to make to the veterinarian, all of the services that they are going to need to fulfill each requirement, and a list of the documentation your will need to collect over the period of your timeline.  Once you have completed your timeline our staff will make every effort to schedule you and your pet for the services that they need on the dates you need them to take place.

**One final note.  Be sure to keep in mind that the state of Hawaii is very strict about their animal quarantine laws.  Please take extra time to thoroughly read all of the provided information and carefully design your personalized timeline.  Failure to meet each and every requirement can result in a very long and costly 120 day quarantine for your pet. **

Testimonial

  • "I will always be grateful to Dr. Choy and her caring staff for saving the life of my beloved beagle, Hero. Hero was critically ill with pancreatitis; Dr. Choy quickly diagnosed and treated Hero, as well as arranging for Hero's care during evening hours. She was candid and encouraging. She monitored Hero's recovery with meticulous care. The Cohen family thanks you, Dr. Choy!"
